Roth To Captain '74 Icemen

Rack up another one for Randy Roth. Harvard's versatile center-iceman, who has been named just about "All-everything" this season, was elected by his teammates yesterday to captain the 1974-75 squad.

Roth succeeds Bob Goodenow and Mark Noonan who co-captained this season's team to an unexpected fourth-place ranking in the nation. Noonan and Goodenow had been the first co-captains in the history of Harvard hockey.

A "Regular Guy"

Roth earned honors as an All-American this year for the Eastern University division, as well as All New England an All-Ivy selections. The junior from Plattsville, Ontario was also named Most Valuable Player after Harvard took the Beanpot trophy from Boston University last February.

In scoring this season, Harvard had a well balanced, explosive offense, which was led by Roth. Skating with Goodenow and Danny Bolduc, Roth amassed 53 points on the season on 21 goals and 32 assists. He finished in a tie for third in scoring in the Ivy League with Crimson forward Steve Dagdigian. Both had 21 points.

But that's all in the past. "I'm looking forward to next season," Roth said yesterday, "much more than I was last season." The Crimson icemen will be graduating only four seniors, Goodenow, All-Ivy defenseman Levy Byrd, Noonan and Dave Hands.

The loss of the three defensemen, two of whom were starters, is going to hurt next season. "We'll have the offensive power back," Roth said, "We'll just have to shore up the defense."

The captain-elect is worried about that the pre-season prognosticaters will expect of his squad next season. "This year they said we weren't going to do too well," Roth commented, "and look at what we did. Next year they'll expect a lot more from us."

Roth, however, is confident and ready to go. If coach Billy Cleary can come up with a couple of defensemen, it should be a good year for the Crimson icemen.
