A Harvard doubles team, consisting of Captain Ken Lindner and John Ingard, turned in a dazzling performance to capture the National Intercollegiate Indoor Doubles Tennis Title, held Saturday at Princeton.

After disposing of a weak Brown team in the opening round, the pair met the number-one-seeded team of the tournament, Diaz and Kopechy of Georgia. In a seat-squirming match, the Crimson tandem defeated the Georgians, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, winning the final tie-breaker by a 5-3 margin.

This upset victory seemed to spur on both Lindner and Ingard in the semi-final found, for they dispatched with amazing ease the Princeton team of Dutton and Fisher, 6-2, 6-2.

Clutch Performance

The Harvard team then proceeded to the final round where they faced the number-two-seeded team of Ratliff and Swift from Virginia. After taking a tense first set, 7-6, Lindner and Ingard went on to overwhelm the Virginians in the second set, 6-3, to win the championship.

So, in taking the national title, Lindner and Ingard defeated the two top-rated doubles teams in the South, Virginia and Georgia, and one of the top-class teams of the Ivy League, Princeton.

Harvard tennis coach Jack Barnaby was ecstatic over his players' performance. "It was a brilliant and totally unexpected victory for us. This win shows that both players have been working hard over the winter to improve their game and acquire new skills."

The win bodes well for this year's Harvard tennis team. Even the normally pessimistic Barnaby said, "We should have a good year. There were lots of first-rate teams there from the South and East. This is simply great for the coming season."
