Sophomore Danny Bolduc's unassisted third-period goal gave Harvard's varsity hockey team a 5-4 victory over the Tigers last Saturday in Princeton's Baker Rink as the Crimson prepared for tonight's contest against arch-rival Boston University in the final round of the 22nd annual Beanpot Hockey Tournament.
Bolduc broke a 4-4 tie at 7:23 of the final stanza when he intercepted a Princeton pass, faked a defender, and shot the puck between Tiger goalie Phil Robinson's legs. Princeton had matched Harvard goal for goal throughout the game, never leading, but never trailing by more than one.
Crimson co-captain Bob Goodenow notched Harvard's first on a power play, Jim McMahon collected the second, Kevin Carr scored a shorthanded goal unassisted, and Leigh Hogan tipped in a shot to contribute to the victory.
Harvard's goalie John Aiken made 16 saves while Robinson blocked 38 shots. The win upped the Crimson's overall record to 9-7-1, with six wins and two losses in the Ivy League and a 9-5 record in ECAC Division I play.
The Crimson icemen will seek their first Beanpot Championship since 1969 tonight when they meet Boston University at 9 p.m. in Boston Garden. The Terriers, who have won their last eight games, will skate for their fifth consecutive Beanpot sweep.
B.U., though a young team, boasts a balanced offense with scoring punch. Leading scorer Bill Burlington has collected 34 points while Terry Meagher and Vic Stanfield have each earned 27 points and six other B.U. skaters have notched over 20 points.
Sophomore Peter Marzo centers the Terriers' first line with classmates Meagher and Bill Robbins on the wings. Stanfield, the ECAC Division I sophomore of the year last season, teams with freshman John McClellan to form the first defensive unit.
All-American Terrier goalie Ed Walsh has earned a 2.77 goals-against average in eighteen games. Captain Walsh and the backup goalie, Jim Robillard, are the only seniors on the squad.
