Spirited Frosh Soccer Squad Outplays Tufts But Loses, 2-1

By Charles Coolidge

The freshman soccer team lost to Tufts yesterday, 2-1, in a game coach Bruce Munro said "they deserved to win."

The Tufts field, which resembled a swamp in certain places, was a big factor in the contest. It hampered passing and slowed down the play as the ball often came to a complete halt in the numerous puddles on the field. Footing, particularly toward the end of the game was non-existent.

As if that confusion were not enough, Tufts neglected to provide a clock so the game was divided into two 45-minute halves and timed on a wristwatch.

The game was highlighted by a Rick Schlosky slide through a puddle as he attempted to make a tackle.

Sloppy and unsettled passing characterized the level of play in the first half. Neither team produced any good scoring threat though the Jumbos did score midway through the half in a free-for-all at the goal mouth.

Early in the second half, Victor Felszegi, with an assist by Benjamin Carr, scored on a give-and-go to tie the game at one apiece.

The Yardlings dominated play for the rest of the game. Aggressive play by the fullbacks held the ball in Tufts' end of the field. The forward line and the halfbacks, using shorter and more accurate passing, peppered the Jumbo goalie with 18 shots.

Tufts, rarely mounting an offensive rush, managed only four shots in the second half. With 10 minutes to go they scored on a defensive lapse rather than a good offensive play.

As the sun set, (the game had begun late), the freshmen attempted a comeback that produced two scoring opportunities, a break away and a two-on-one, but not the tying goal.

Munro said the freshman booters "out-hustled and out-played" the Jumbos, adding that "this is the way it has been going--we just don't get the breaks."

With yesterday's loss the freshman record drops to 1-6. Only Brown and Yale remain on the schedule.
