Steve Williams of Adams House won first prize in the first-ever Poland Springs Inn Scrabble Tournament at Poland Springs, Maine, this past weekend.
Williams won five of six matches en route to the championship, topping the field of 20 contestants with a total of 2433 points. He far outdistanced his nearest rival, who managed 2117 points.
Williams, a member of Scrabble and Crossword Game Players, Inc., got off to a flying start with an 89-point word on his first play of his first match.
After losing the fourth game, however, Williams was behind by 13 points. But two fine efforts in the fifth and sixth games ensured the victory.
"The competition was pretty good," Williams said yesterday. "So I knew I had to play pretty well to win."
