Radcliffe Swim Team Turns In Strong Showing At Wellesley

The Radcliffe swim team turned in an impressive performance at the Wellesley College Relays held last Saturday at Wellesley College.

Although official team scores were not tallied, unofficial tabulations indicated that the Crimson would have been at the top of the 13 school field in a close battle with Mt. Holyoke for first place.

The strong showing was a significant improvement for Radcliffe over its performance last week, in which Mt. Holyoke finished well ahead of Radcliffe in the five school Radcliffe Invitational Meet.

"I was extremely pleased with the team's performance," Crimson coach Alice McCabe said. "It was much better than last week."

Radcliffe was at a handicap early in the meet when one of its star swimmers, tri-capt. Nancy Sato, was late because she was playing in the Radcliffe-Yale field hockey game. As a result, the Crimson did not do as well in the medley relay without Sato as it had done the week before, when Radcliffe established an IAB pool record.

However, Sato appeared in time for the backstroke relay and, together with tri-capt. Kris Krendl, Diana Borden, and Laurie Downey, shaved nine seconds off the record to win the event. Sato and Borden then banded together to take first place in the team diving event.

In the butterfly relay, the Radcliffe quartet of tri-capt. Maureen Murphy, Sato, Downey, and Sue Sawyer captured second, while Krendl, Borden, Downey, and freshwoman Carol Moore also copped a second place in the individual medley. Radcliffe took five thirds in the other relay events.
