Houses Win 13 of 22 Contests; Eliot Takes Soccer Title, 3-1

Harvard's House athletic teams added to the Elis' woes by winning 13 of 22 contests against the Yale Colleges, including the championships of soccer and coed touch football.

Eliot House captured the soccer crown Friday by a 3-1 victory over Saybrook College, which had shut out its last six opponents. Tim Lodge scored first for Eliot on a shot which barely rolled through the puddles and over the goal line. Saybrook tied it in the second quarter after Eliot had substituted for most of its starters.

In the third quarter, Dave Evans drilled a shot past the helpless goalie after a scramble in front of the Saybrook net. John Horan tallied an insurance goal as his kick bounced off a Saybrook fullback and slid between the goalie's legs.

"They didn't seem to want the game as badly as we did," Horan said yesterday.

Winthrop House twice rallied from deficits to take the coed touch football championship from Pierson College, 13-12. Bernie Bach fired a 50-yard touchdown bomb to Lissa Muscatine, giving Winthrop a 7-6 lead.

Pierson went ahead 12-7 in the second quarter, but Winthrop notched the game winner on the last play of the first half as Rich Brody threw two yards to Rod Thaler.

Kirkland House's tackle football team led twice, but Calhoun-Berkeley came from behind to win, 15-14. Al Yates broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown scamper, and quarterback Gary Fratesi plunged over from one yard out to give Kirkland a 14-7 lead.

Calhoun-Berkeley rallied to score on an 80-yard screen pass on which the receiver avoided a swarm of tacklers and just managed to stay in bounds. The two-point conversion on a fake kick clinched the victory.

Calhoun College knocked off Lowell House for the all-male touch football title, 26-12. The Elis overloaded the Lowell zone defense and marched down the field on short passes, while the Lowell offense unsuccessfully tried to throw long in attempting to catch up.
