Water Polo Squad Wipes Out Three Rivals to Win Tourney

After three stunning losses last week, the Harvard waterpolo squad must have wondered why it even bothered going into the water. But this weekend's action went far to erase any regrets the aquamen might have had, as the Crimson swept past Dartmouth, Philadelphia Aquatic, and Northeastern to win the Fifth Annual Harvard Waterpolo tournament.

Wes Raffel was most of the offense as Harvard rolled over the Big Green, 9-1 Friday night. George Magalack, Dan Dias and senior captain Al Bozer joined Raffel in racking up 13 goals to Philly's 12 tallies, in Saturday morning action. The four were also instrumental in edging out Northeastern, by a 4-3 margin, later in the day.

Oldies But Goodies

Bozer said yesterday that of all the teams in the tourney, Philadelphia Aquatic presented the strongest challenge. "They were older and a bit over the hill but they had one old Olympic star," he said.

Dartmouth, a traditionally weak water polo school was "out-maneuvered and out-finessed" by Harvard, Magalack said yesterday.

"We've got a strong class of freshmen coming in that really helped us," Magalack said. Freshmen Jim Jones, Gerry Feliciano, Tom Tonaka and Brian McCarren all contributed to the triple win.

Both Magalack and Bozer were surprised that the Crimson came back so strong after the team's three-way shellacking at Brown last weekend.

"It was a tremendous moral victory to see how strongly we drove into the hole," Magalack said. "It was especially amazing considering how out of practice we were last week."
