Other Ivy League stadiums were not as somber as Soldiers Field Saturday. Powerhouse offenses carried Yale and Cornell to easy victories over non-league opponents. Penn squeezed by Brown, 14-9; Dartmouth fell to Holy Cross, 14-3; and Princeton squashed hapless Columbia, 40-13.
Yale's awesome offense could muster only one first-half touchdown against Colgate, but clicked for 23 points in the second half to beat the Red Raiders, 30-7. A brutal Bulldog defense forced Colgate to fumble a record nine times in the game. The Elis are undefeated so far this year.
Big Red Rolls
In Ithaca, Cornell rolled over Bucknell, 24-0. For the second week in a row, flashy halfback Don Fanelli scored three touchdowns for the Big Red. Cornell rushed for 233 yards in the game to a scant 46 for the Bisons.
In Ivy action, Princeton trounced perenially weak Columbia, 40-13. The Tigers scored in every period while stacking up the biggest margin of the day for any Ivy team.
The Lions' passing attack yielded a meager 18 yards for the afternoon. Columbia will tangle with Joe Restic's Crimson next week in New York.
Brown controlled Penn for three quarters of the only other Ivy game, but a dazzling punt return by Quaker Adolph Bellzeare in the closing minutes gave Penn a narrow five-point victory over the Bruins, 14-9.
Holy Cross continued its crusade against Ivy League teams by stifling Dartmouth, 14-3. The Big Green could not find a counterpart to Harvard's Holt-McInally combination in trying to match the Crimson's 24-14 victory over Holy Cross last week.
The Dartmouth offense has gone pale; the Green boast a 42-yard field goal as their only score of the year. Holy Cross held Dartmouth's total offense for the day to 53 yards in the Crusaders' Homecoming game.
