Exeter Bombs Freshmen, 4-1; Booters Drop Munro's Debut

Exeter ruined Bruce Munro's debut as freshman soccer coach yesterday, trouncing the Crimson by a 4-1 margin.

"We blew it," Munro said of his freshman opener, "We got bombed. We're woefully lacking in any kind of preparation and conditioning."

Munro cut the size of the team in half on Friday, not giving the remaining players much time to prepare for yesterday's game. "We had over sixty bodies out there in the beginning," Munro said, "It was wall-to-wall people." The thirty survivors are just getting down to the business of putting together an organized attack.

Exeter, on the other hand, had four games under its belt going into yesterday's contest and a good deal more pre-season training than Munro's charges. "They wore us out," Munro commented, "They dressed over thirty guys and were running them in and out every minute."

Harvard held on to a 1-0 lead going into the second quarter, thanks to a score by Harold Martin and the shutout goaltending of Fred Harold. But Exeter was soon able to wear out the Crimson, and their 6 ft. 5 in., 235 lb. goalkeeper managed to stave off any further Crimson attack.

Munro, who retired from varsity coaching duties last spring after a successful 26 years (192-85-25), used a three-man line and three halfbacks in the game. But he plans to switch to a 4-2-4 with a diamond defense for the next encounter with Brown Monday.
