Harvard Wins One, Losses One Against Quakers

Harvard's varsity skaters collected their fourth Ivy League win last Saturday when they downed Pennsylvania, 4-2, before a small crowd in Watson Rink to even their overall season record at 6-6-1.

Junior Steve Dagdigian scored the game winner at 6:25 of the final period and then added a power-play in surance goal with three minutes left to lead Harvard to victory. In the last two games the right winger has collected six points on four goals and two assists.

The Crimson currently stands 4-1-0 in the Ivies with two victories over the Quakers, a 10-1 win over Princeton, a 6-2 win over Brown, and a 5-4 loss to Dartmouth. Dartmouth downed Penn last Friday in Hanover, leaving the Quakers to return from their weekend trip north with a 2-3 Ivy record.

The first period went scoreless although Harvard enjoyed three power play opportunities. Crimson forward Paul Haley felled Penn goalie Tony Ciresi after being slashed on a breakaway, but Ciresi was able to stay in the game.

McMahon opened the scoring at 1:06 of the second period when he popped the puck into an open net from the left side of the crease after Ciresi had been drawn to the right. Ted Thorndike took a pass from Leigh Hogan and converted at 13:29 to widen Harvard's lead to two goals.

Penn narrowed the margin, however, early in the third period when senior Bernie LeFrancois scored on an open net. Harvard goalie Jim Murray had gone behind the cage to retrieve the puck, which bounced off his stick out to LeFrancois in front of the crease.

Dagdigian scored at 6:25 to put the Crimson ahead again by two, but at 13:48 LeFrancois put in a rebound during a power play to notch his second goal and cut the Crimson lead.

With three minutes left to play, Penn's Ray Lalonde was called for hooking, and Dagdigian scored on a rebound to insure a Harvard victory. Senior Levy Byrd, skating on the power play for the first time, and junior Randy Roth assisted on the final goal.

Roth, the Crimson's top scorer, has collected ten goals and thirteen assists so far this season.
