Nolan Ryan of the California Angels broke the strikeout record of another California pitcher (Sandy Koufax; remember him sports fans?) and picked up his 21st victory Thursday night when he fanned 16 Twins in Minnesota.
Ryan has 383 strikeouts this season, 712 strikeouts over the past two seasons, and two no-hitters and one one-hitter this year. Not bad, but apparently not good enough for American League All-Star manager Dick Williams who didn't name Ryan for the All-Star lineup.
Ryan says he doesn't feel badly about the All-Star game and that he would settle for the American League Cy Young Award. Williams isn't saying anything.
