Eight days of practice under the Florida sun did anything but help the Crimson golfers as they finished a distant third against Penn State and Navy in their first match of the season at Annapolis on Saturday.
Plagued by the terrain of Navy's golf course, Harvard's varsity lost the match by 28 strokes. While the top five Crimson golfers had a combined score of 422, Penn State's team triumphed with a total of 394 strokes. Navy, second in the match, finished with a score of 403.
"Annapolis had the worst greens I ever played on," Tom Yellin, the Crimson's low shooter for the match, said yesterday. Yellin shot a 78 while the rest of the team scored in the 80's and low 90's.
Art Burke, the Crimson's number one golfer this year, shot a disappointing 87 for the day. Burke hit the ball well but the Navy greens killed his putting. Quin Smith, the number two man, failed to qualify for the match at Annapolis.
