Bok Indicates 5-Year Terms

President Bok has ended the time-honored tradition of open-ended terms for Masters by appointing all new Masters to five-year terms and, according to a source close to William Liller, Master of Adams House, encouraging present Masters to retire.

Ann and Martin Peretz, co-Masters of South House, and Ursula and Paul Levine, co-Masters of Currier House, all said last week that Bok had appointed them to five year terms, and Martin Peretz explained that "all the new Masters are being appointed to five-year terms."

The source close to Liller said that Bok had urged Liller to resign because there were many other faculty members who wanted to be Masters.

Bok denied last week that he had encouraged Liller to resign and said that he does not appoint Masters to specific terms.

He did say, however, that he has started appointing Masters to specific minimum terms, and that when those terms expire he will informally review continuing the appointment through an evaluation of the Master's performance and discussions with the Master.
