Sox Lose Fifth Straight, 11-7, As Tigers Pound Out 16 Hits

Aurelio Rodriguez and Bill Freehan collected four hits each and Mickey Stanley belted a three-run homer as the Detroit Tigers mauled Boston pitching again for an 11-7 victory yesterday, completing a sweep of a four-game series with the slumping Red Sox.

The Tigers, who arrived in Boston with a .165 team batting average, battered three pitchers for 16 hits, raising their total for the four days to 56.

The Red Sox, who have lost five in a row after winning their first four games, tied the count, 2-2, in their half of the second as Orlando Cepeda hoisted his second homer as a designated hitter.

Stanley put the Tigers in front with his second homer of the season after a two-out walk and Rodriguez's second single in the third. Detroit added another run in the fourth, shelling Boston starter John Curtis.

Veteran Sonny Siebert, making his first appearance in the campaign, gave up a run in the sixth, giving way to Bob Veale, who was tagged for three runs, two unearned, in the eighth and one in the ninth. Bob Bolin replaced Veale to get the final out in the ninth.

Depth Check

Bill Freehan had three hits, including a double, while Kaline, Stanley and Willie Horton had two hits apiece for the Tigers.

The Red Sox pulled to within one run, 5-4, in the second as Dwight Evans led off with his first homer and singles by Tommy Harper and Carl Yastrzemski and an infield out provided another tally.

Detroit starter Woodie Fryman allowed another run on a double by Luis Aparicio and a single by Yastrzemski in the fifth. Fryman then gave way to reliever Tom Timmerman, who was nicked for a run on Cepeda's eighth-inning single and Yastrzemski's infield hit in the ninth.

The Red Sox take a short break from their home schedule this weekend, travelling to Cleveland for a four-game series Friday night and winding up with a doubleheader Sunday. Boston returns home to play the Minnesota Twins next Tuesday.
