Golfers Defeat Cornell, Regain Form

The Crimson golfers started living up to their potential yesterday with an eight-stroke victory over Cornell at the Concord Country Club.

The victory came in the golf team's first Ivy League match of the season and first match ever on the Concord course. The win put some of the luster back into pre-season predictions of a Harvard powerhouse after those predictions had been badly tarnished by last week's double loss to Navy and Penn State.

Bill Salatich, Quinn Smith and Steve McConnell all shot 79s, leading the golf team to a five-man total of 399. Captain Skip Berry worked the Concord course for an 80 and Art Burke and Tom Yellin each checked in at 82.

The low score for the day was a 77 by Cornell's Lewis Stone.

Steve McConnell pointed out the great depth of the golf team, with seven men shooting right around the 80 mark (the seventh being John Stoviak at 83), which should keep it in contention all season.

Tom Yellin, while emphasizing that the team was satisfied with the win, said, "We didn't play as well as we can. We can cut 20 strokes off of what we did today."

McConnell said that the golf team is going to have to do a lot of work if it's going to make the NCAA finals this year. There is, however, little doubt that Coach Bob Harrison's golfers have the potential for such a performance.
