Maryland and Wake Forest were victors yesterday afternoon in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball tournament.

Wake Forest defeated second-seeded North Carolina 54-52 in overtime on a basket by sophomore Phil Perry. Wake Forest was saved from a first round loss by a layup by freshman Lee Foye in the final second of regulation time to tie the score at 48-all.

Maryland, seeded third in the tournament, beat Clemson 77-61 and will meet Wake Forest in a semifinal round of the tournament Friday night.

Unbeated North Carolina State, second ranked nationally and top seeded, drew a first round by and will play Friday night against the winner of the Duke-Virginia game.
