Class of '48 Picks Goldberg Marshal For Second Time

Ray A. Goldberg '48, a professor at the Business School, will preside over the June 1973 Commencement activities as Chief Marshal of the Alumni.

Goldberg, Moffett Professor of Agriculture and Business, was elected to the position by members of his class, who will hold their 25th reunion in June. The 25th reunion class traditionally elects the Chief Marshal.

Three of Goldberg's classmates-J. Anthony Lewis '48, London correspondent for The New York Times and former Crimson managing editor, George Plimpton '48, the author of Paper Lion, and Walter Robb '48-ran against Goldberg. A committee selected by the officers of the class nominated all four in January.

Thirty-eight per cent of the class voted in the election, Peter D. Shultz '52, acting general secretary of the Associated Harvard Alumni (AHA), said yesterday. The AHA distributed ballots to the members of the class in November.

The post is nothing new for Goldberg, who was chosen Class Marshal for his class's graduation. "I am very grateful that the Class elected me Marshal again, 25 years later," he said yesterday.

Goldberg helped to create the concept of "agribusiness," which deals with the operations involved in the manufacture and distribution of farm supplies.

Dr. John H. Knowles '47, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, was last year's Chief Marshal. Seven alumni including Attorney General Richard D. Kleindeinst '47 and Clifton R. Wharton Jr. '47, president of Michigan State University, were nominated for the post.
