McManama Wins Tudor Cup, Named Most Valuable Player

The Friends of Harvard Hockey awarded Bob McManama '73 the John Tudor Memorial Cup for the squad's most valuable player Tuesday night at the team's annual breakup dinner at the Harvard Club of Boston.

McManama, the star center who led the team in scoring with 51 points this season, and who has been named to the All-Ivy and All-American hockey teams, was not present at the dinner. His father, who received the award for him, said he is in Europe on the U.S. Junior World Cup team.

The Donald Angier Trophy, given to the most improved player, went to Robert Goodenow '74, next year's co-captain. Goodenow hustled to 10 goals and 20 assists during the season in the right wing position.

The Cooney Weiland Award, given by the former Harvard hockey coach to the team's "unsung hero," was presented by Weiland himself to former team captain Kevin F. Hampe '73 and to William J. Corkery Jr. '73.

Defenseman Hampe scored three goals and made nine assists, and Corkery, on right wing, scored 23 goals and contributed 27 assists during the team's 17-4-1 season.

Joke Prize

The Bert Englebert Award, a joke award initiated five years ago, was given to Goodenow. The award, which one fan called "possibly the ugliest and most useless trophy ever devised," shows a hockey player wearing rolling skates and set to take a slap shot even though he has no stick.

Corkery gave Goodenow the award, saying that he received it for playing in the Princeton game in a Princeton uniform, having left his equipment in Cambridge.

About 165 alumni, members of the team and their families, and members of the athletic department attended the ceremonies.
