Grapplers Edge Chiefs, 20-17

Harvard wrestling captain Richie Starr pressed Springfield's Gary Bernard for a key second-round pin that put the Crimson permanently ahead, as Harvard edged the Chiefs, 20-17, last night in the IAB.

With the team score deadlocked, 14-14, Starr opened at 190 with a quick takedown. He got Bernard on a near fall in the first round and eventually racked up ten points before he pinned Bernard at 1:53 in the second round.

"It was a damn good win," coach John Lee said after the meet. "Starr was primed for the pin. We couldn't have won without him."

Harvard's Dan Blakinger (118) opened the meet by pinning Ed Martin with 36 seconds left in the last round.

The Crimson copped two other exciting wins when Carl Biello (134) decimated his Springfield foe, 10-2, and Jim Strathmeyer (177) pulled off a come-from-behind 6-3 victory.

Harvard's George Baker (142) drew a disappointing 5-5 tie after closing a 2-4 deficit in the third round with an escape and takedown just before the buzzer. Springfield won the tying point for accumulated riding time.

The Chiefs defeated Bill Haley (126), 9-3, Mike Dee (150), 2-0, John Keough (158), 9-1, Bruce Johnson (167), 8-2 and Carl Culig (unlimited), 1-0.
