John Cappelletti, star running back for the Nittany Lions of Penn State, was named winner of the 1973 Heisman Trophy. The 215-pound senior from Upper Darby, Pa., more than doubled the point total of runner-up John Hicks, an offensive tackle from Ohio State. Cappelletti ran for over 100 yards in eight games this season, surpassing his last year's record.
