B.U. Icemen Stifle Rally; Yardlings Drop First, 6-4

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

It took Harvard's freshman hockey team almost two periods yesterday to get untracked, and by the time they did, Boston University had raced to a 4-1 lead and was not to be caught. The 6-4 loss at the hands of the Terrier freshmen is the first Crimson defeat this year, dropping its record to 4-1.

The freshman squad was frustrated through much of the early going, due to its own sloppy passing and some fine goal-keeping by B.U.'s Pat Devlin.

The Terriers scored the initial tally of the game at 6:14 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Jon Goldbloom broke the ice for the Crimson at 15:01, deflecting home John Schuster's drive. Bill MacKenzie was also credited with an assist on the play, which sent the game into the second period tied at 1-1.

A five minute lapse in defense during the second period allowed B.U.'s Bill Russell to pick up a hat trick with three consecutive goals to propel the Terriers to a 4-1 lead.

Harvard continued its uninspired play through much of the second stanza. The Yardlings' only marker of the period came with one second remaining on the clock.

An excited B.U. player tipped in Mike Leckie's desperation attempt, leaving the Crimson at the short end of a 4-2 score entering the final period.

New Life

The third period saw new life injected into the Crimson squad. B.U., however, opened the scoring with a power play goal at 9:18 to take a 5-2 edge.

Leckie then scored his second goal of the game for the Crimson at 10:35. Bill Horton followed one minute later with a spectacular rush and a goal to cut the deficit to 5-4.

A breakaway goal by B.U. with three minutes left, however, halted Harvard's determined comeback effort. The Terriers emerged with a 6-4 victory, evening their record at 2-2.
