Boston College Doesn't Show For Match With J.V. Booters

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Harvard junior varsity soccer team was scheduled to go under the lights in a match against Boston College last night, but the B.C. varsity hadn't been told that it was supposed to play.

It was the second time in two year's that coach Seamus Malin's booters had been avoided by the Boston College team. After last year's scheduling mix-up, Malin and the B.C. coach made efforts to insure that another scheduled match would not go unplayed. As insurance they scheduled this season's match 12 months ago.

But yesterday, when Malin called Boston College sports information to make sure that Harvard would have someone to play, he was told that the coach was out of town. No one had even heard that there was a match scheduled.

Malin is not a coach to be upset easily. For a man whose team has not won a single match all year, he remains incredibly calm in the face of events that would drive anyone else out of his mind.

After yesterday's mix-up, however, he was a little less serene.

"I am so annoyed I can't stand it," he said. "this happened to us last year, so we arranged a date months in advance. I just can't believe this has happened again."

Malin said he felt his team would have had an even match against B.C.--after five straight losses this season, it certainly wouldn't have hurt to find out.

Malin said that he will try to arrange a match against B.C. for early next week, probably for Monday or Tuesday.

The booters have only two more matches, including the hoped-for B.C. match, before the end of the season. The last bout takes place next Thursday in a rematch at home against Brown.

Malin is a very optimistic coach, even in the face of his team's dismal record so far. But with Dave Winton out with a broken leg, and John Kiernan recuperating in Stillman Infirmary from an operation to remove a spleen ruptured in last Wednesday's Brown match, Malin isn't planning any victory parties.
