Crimson Booters Pick Steve Mead To Lead '74 Team

Steve Mead, a junior fullback from Beverly Farms, was elected captain of the 1974 Harvard soccer team on Tuesday night.

The announcement came during a dinner for the soccer team at the Harvard Club of Boston. Mead follows goalie Steve Kidder and halfback Ric Scott as the third defensive player in a row to be elected captain.

"I think it was a good choice," head coach Bruce Munro said yesterday. "He's very popular and well-liked."

The 6 foot, 160 pound Mead started at left fullback for the Crimson until injuring his ankle against Dartmouth. He then alternated with sophomore Geoff Hargadon for the remainder of the season.

The Louis G. Williams Memorial Trophy was split between two players for the first time ever. Brian Fearnett and Lawson Wulsin, both fullbacks, shared the honor awarded to the senior who "displayed an exceptional degree of those qualities of athletic skill and sportsmanship, of devotion to his team and to the highest ideals of competitive sports which characterized the man for whom the award is named." Williams played at Harvard between 1961 and 1964.
