The Famine

MUCH OF AFRICA is in the grips of a widespread famine, and Ethiopia is the nation hardest hit by lack of food because it has not been getting aid from the United Nations and other world organizations. 180,000 Ethiopians starved to death last week.

The Harvard-Radcliffe Association of African and Afro-American Students is organizing a fast at dinner tonight in an effort to raise relief money for the starving Ethiopians: University Food Services will donate 70 cents for each person who does not eat.

Skipping one meal is a tiny sacrifice for Harvard students to make, and it might prompt them to think about making bigger sacrifices for people dying of humger. It now is too late to sign up for the fast; everyone, whether or not they have signed up, should realize that skipping one meal is only the beginning of what must be done for Ethiopia.
