Harvard Loses Opener to Inspired Wildcats, 3-2

Durham, N.H.--A capacity crowd of 4000 devout Wildcat fans watched the University of New Hampshire come from behind to edge Harvard's varsity hockey team last night, 3-2, in Snively Arena here.

Sophomore Jamie Hislop collected the game-winning goal at 16:02 of the final period less than 2 minutes after his teammate, Rick Olmstead, had tied the score at 2-2.

Hislop tallied on a rebound after senior All-American winger Gordie Clark had brought the puck down ice. Clark passed to Ed Freni, who took the initial shot before Hislop scored.

Cap Proves Invincible

The Crimson almost tied the game in the final two minutes when Harvard held a man advantage. Wildcat goalie Cap Raeder proved invincible, however, as he protected his team's one-goal lead.

The Wildcats opened the scoring at 10:40 of the first period when freshman defenseman Tim Burke beat Crimson goalie Jim Murray with a high slapshot from the left point.

One minute earlier Raeder had made a key save on Harvard's Kevin Burke, who blasted a shot from five feet out on the right side. Burke replaced injured Jim Thomas on the first line.

Both teams had a power-play opportunity in the opening stanza but neither could capitalize on the man-up advantage, and the first period ended with the Crimson trailing 1-0.

Junior Ted Thorndike notched Harvard's first goal at 1:34 of the second period with a high shot into the far corner from 15 feet inside the blue line.

Harvard entered the third period with a one-goal lead, but at 14:26, Wildcat forward Olmstead scored on a close shot from the crease area. Two minutes later, Hislop beat Murray to make the final score 3-2.

The Wildcats won revenge for last season's 9-3 loss to the Crimson, and they provided their coach, Charlie Holt, with his 100th victory in six seasons at UNH.
