Freshmen Topple Brown In Fourth Grid Win, 15-6

The Harvard freshman football team combined a stingy defense with the running of halfback Tommy Winn to dump Brown, 15-6, in a game played yesterday at Harvard Stadium. The win upped the Yardlings' record to 4-2.

The Crimson threatened to rout the Bruins in the first quarter, striking for two quick scores and a 15-0 lead. Midway through the opening period, Harvard quarterback Steve O'Brien capped a 68-yard, 16-play drive with a two-yard touch-down sneak.

Following a recovery of a fumble at the Brown 29, on the very next play from scrimmage, the Crimson scored again, this time in six plays. Tom Winn powered off right tackle for the final yard, and Steve Saxon alertly skirted right end with a fumbled snap for the two-point conversion.

But a Bruin goal-line stand early in the second quarter turned the momentum around and only Brown's blunders prevented them from scoring before halftime. A touchdown pass was nullified by a penalty, and Harvard's Madison Shockley covered a Brown fumble at the Crimson one-yard line.

The Crimson defense continued to come up with the big play in the second half.

Brown finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Tim Blodgett took a handoff from Bruin quarterback Kevin Dare and plunged over from the one. Dare failed in the two-point conversion attempt, however, and Harvard retained a comfortable nine-point lead.

Halfback Winn racked up 133 yards rushing in 26 carries for the Yardlings, and his quick starts from scrimmage allowed him to spend most of the afternoon in the Brown defensive secondary.
