Harvard Students To Vote on Divestment From Israel in Inaugural HUA Election Survey
The Harvard freshman soccer team defeated a strong Dartmouth squad yesterday 2-0 in its first Ivy League game of the season.
The Crimson failed to score in the first half as it had problems adjusting to the short field and hard playing surface of the Dartmouth field.
Less confused and more accustomed to the field conditions, Harvard came out running in the second half, carried the play and scored on efforts from fullback Kevin Jiggets at 9:11 and from Tom Jones at 26:41. Both goals came on assists from newly elected captain Lyman Bullard.
The first score came when Jiggets headed the ball past the Dartmouth goalie on a Bullard corner kick. Seventeen minutes later, Janes took a pass from Bullard inside the penalty area and drilled home the final score.
Coach Dana Getchell called the fresh man defense "exceptionally good" in its second shutout performance of the season. He credited his goalkeeper Alex Delacal with a "terrific job" in yesterday's win, which broke a two-game Dartmouth victory streak against the Crimson.
Crimson Struggle
The defensive fullback line of Jiggets, Aris Yannapoulis, and Chris Sanders managed to contain the relatively large and aggressive Dartmouth attackers during the first half while the Crimson struggled to mount a scoring attack. The Crimson passing was generally off the mark during the first half.
"We play on a long field with long grass here in Cambridge so our passes were going long for a while," Getchell said after the game.
The Crimson freshmen are now 3-1 for the season and expect nothing but tough games the rest of the season. Brown, Princeton, and Yale will all be "gunning for us," Getchell said. The Crimson are scheduled to face Andover at home in its next game on Wednesday.
Getchell described Bullard as an "excellent choice" to lead his team of "live wires." Bullard was elected by a vote of team members on Thursday afternoon.
