David L. Halberstam '55 will open a three-part lecture series next week on society's values and how these values are reflected in major current issues.

K. Dun Gifford '60, vice president for Urban Affairs at Cabot. Cabot and Forbes, a Boston real estate development firm, and Marion Wright Edelman, civil rights lawyer and director of Harvard's Center for Law and Education, will deliver the other two lectures on February 7 and March 6, respectively.

Halberstam, presently a fellow of the Adlai Stevenson Institute, will concentrate on Vietnam policy-making under Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, the subject of his recent book. The Best and the Brightest.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist will discuss "Vietnam: What Went Wrong" at 8 p.m. on January 10 in Lowell Lecture Hall.

Gifford, a former official for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, will discuss "Land: How Citizens Can Protect It."

Edelman will speak on "Children: Their Rights and Protection." She is currently planning a new organization, the Children's Defense Fund, to establish and protect children's rights.

The Shady Hill School, a Cambridge private school, is sponsoring the series to raise money for its scholarship fund. Approximately 20 per cent of its students receive financial aid.

"We are emphasizing the educational purpose of the series and the very important current issues to which the series addresses itself," Judy Sec. a member of the school's Lecture Series Committee, said yesterday.
