Northeastern, showing the signs of a tough schedule, three games in four days against St. Lawrence Clarkson and Harvard, was completely outclassed last night as the crimson romped to a 8-1 victory.
The "Local Line" again came up with a super performance collecting five goals and six assists Dave Hynes, who scored four goals in the Princeton scrimmage, got the hat trick, scoring one in each period.
Despite the seemingly slim two-goal lead after the opening stanza, the Crimson thoroughly dominated the period, getting off 14 shots on Husky goaltender Tod Blanchard most of them real testers. The score could easily have been five or six to nothing, but Blanchard, with some help from the crossbar and post, kept the score down.
Harvard's power play made short work of its appointed task, converting on both of the Husky's first stanza penalties. Just 16 seconds after Marc Green was whistled into the box for boarding. Corkery lit the lamp on a shot from about a foot outside the crease.
Hynes got his first of the night only 32 seconds into the Crimson's second man advantage. The rally resulted from a goal-month scramble, with the "Local Line" applying the pressure.
Northeastern didn't ignore Bertagna completely, however, as the Crimson netminder was forced to make several sterling saves. The Huskies were plagued with high shots, and could only muster two shots during their single power play opportunity.
The second period proved to be pretty much the same, as the Crimson piled on three more goals by Bob McManama, Larry Desmond and Hynes Northeastern again came up with several serious threats but Bertagna was flawless in the net.
Hynes got Harvard's fifth tally, and his second of the game at 18:05 of the middle chapter, assisted by Bob Muse and Bill Corkery. Corkery fed him with a picture perfect pass from outside the face off circles to the right corner of the net for the tally.
Northeastern witched goalies for the final period, putting Bill McKenna in Harvard's line of fire. The Crimson took advantage of the change, scoring three goals in the first three minutes on the first three shots on net.
Hynes completed the trick at 1:08 converting on a long shot that went between McKenna's legs. Bob Goodenow tallied at 2:08 on a slapper and 50 seconds later. Jim Thomas capped a dazzling display of passing from his linemates Randy Roth and Goodenow for Harvard's eighth goal.
Northeastern's Den Condon spoiled Harvard's bid for their first shutout of the season on a low 15 footer at 12:15 that beat Steve Perry, who replaced Bertagna about midway through the third period.
The Crimson icemen go into exam break 10-1, and still number one. The next game is February 3 in an exhibition against St. Nicholas.
