RAPID CITY, S.D.--Several hundred cheering and a band playing "Happy Days Are Here Again" welcomed Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern back to his native South Dakota today.
The vacation spot picked out weeks ago in anticipation of McGovern's victory in last week's Miami Beach convention is a lodge at Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, south of Mount Rushmore.
The South Dakota senator will be accompanied by a small personal staff. Starting later this week, his top political advisors, financial planners, and his running mate, Sen. Thomas F. Eagleton of Missouri, will come to the lodge for conferences.
