Billie Jean King of Long Beach, Calif., won the women's singles title yesterday at the French Open Tennis Championships--the only major crown that had escaped her--by defeating Yvonne Goolagong of Australia, 6-3, 6-3.
King avenged her straight sets' loss to Goolagong in the final at Wimbledon last year.
Spain's Andres Gimeno scored his first international victory, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Patrick Proisy for the men's singles title.
