"I'm a Real Hard Hat' Says Ed Barry, New Golf Captain

"I'm a real hard hat," says the golf team's new captain Ed Barry. Barry, who majors in sociology and works construction in Roxbury, was elected on Monday as the team's new leader.

Barry thinks that next year could be the Crimson's big chance. "It looks optimistic for next year," he says. "For one thing, we'll have Arthur Burke playing." Burke, who performed well in a number of tournaments in Western Massachusetts, transferred here and was ineligible to play this season.

"We also have a good crop of freshmen," he adds. "John Ellision, Robin Wynn and four or five other guys have had really impressive seasons."

Barry came to golf when he was ten years old. His father was the New England Amateur Golf champ, and introduced him to the game early.

"I wasn't really interested in golf when I was younger. I played a lot of hockey, but after I got married, I began losing interest in hockey and started liking golf."

Barry is the father of a three year old girl.

His optimism for this year's squad is also based on the fact that most of this year's squad will return next season. Terry Wynn (Robin's big brother) and captain Skip Kistner are graduating, but the returnees will include Barry. John Stoviak, Andy Marx, and Quinn Smith, among others.

"A lot of it is going to be a matter of how hard we work at it, which is true of most things in sports, but next year we'll really have the material to work with," Barry said.
