A powerful Cornell squad seeking its second consecutive NCAA championship title overwhelmed the varsity lacrosse team, 19-6, yesterday on the Business School Field.

Cornell dominated the game with an effective attack and complete control of ground balls, taking advantage of numerous man-up situations, as the Crimson received 15 penalties.

Harvard played its best in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. Attackman Steve Leahy scored for the Crimson before Cornell's offense came to life.

But at the end of the first quarter, the Big Red led, 5-2, and by half-time Harvard was down, 11-5. Co-captain Bob Green scored the Crimson's second goal, Steve Milliken earned the next two, and Leahy threw in an over-the-shoulder backhand shot before the second quarter ended.

A strong second-half performance enabled the Big Red to win by a 16-goal margin.

Harvard was outscored, 8-1, in the last two periods as midfielder Garth Ballantyne notched the Crimson's only goal.

Cornell's star was All-American middie Bob Shaw, who collected five goals and two assists. Linemate Bruce Arena, scored four times to boost his already impressive point total to 24.

"Pleasing" Offense

Harvard coach Bruce Munro was pleased with his offense's play against last year's Ivy League champions. "They weren't brilliant, but they played as well as they could," he said.

Munro directed his only criticism against the defense, which he felt "was caught napping several times." He also noted that "the roof fell in at the end of the game," but pointed out that everyone who had come to practice regularly played in the second half.

Goalies

Harvard used all three goalies, with Rob Abbot playing most of the game. Abbot gave up 16 scores, Joe Walker allowed three, and Bob Coplan, who came in at the end of the game, allowed none.

Cornell currently holds a 7-1 record, having won its three Ivy League games so far this season. The Big Red has downed Hofstra, Adelphi, Penn, Fairleigh-Dickinson, Dartmouth and Syracuse.

The Crimson is now 1-7, and still seeks its first Ivy League victory. Next Wednesday Harvard faces MIT, which it trounced, 25-4, last season.
