Heavy Crew Races at Brown Today

PROVIDENCE. R.I.--Newly named Olympic crew coach Harry Parker unveils his 1972 version of the Harvard heavyweights here today in the Stein Cup against Brown on the Seekonk River.

The Crimson varsity, undefeated in Stein Cup competition, is out for its eighth straight against a Brown squad that swept past B.U. and Williams on the Charles River last Saturday.

Last year, Harvard's varsity beat the Bruins by 4.6 seconds over 2000 meters. But this season, bolstered by the return of oarsmen from last year's J.V. squad that upended the Crimson in the Stein Cup and then went on to win the Eastern sprint championship, Brown coach Vic Michaelson is optimistic about his squad's chances.

"We have three varsity lettermen returning compared to Harvard's five, but don't count us out, we rowed very well last week," Michaelson said.

In last week's race against B.U. and Williams, the Bruins pulled away from the Terriers in the last 500 meters to win by one and a half lengths in a time of 6:45:7.

Brown's second varsity boat won by five lengths, completing the 2000 meter Charles River Basin course in 6:56:0 while the freshman eight turned in a 6:47:2 for a three-length win.

This week Michaelson's varsity will be using the same seat positions as last week. Stroke George Taylor will be receiving orders from coxswain Bob Kimura.

Peter Falk will be anchoring the starboard side at seven followed by captain Todd Craun at six, Ed Ford at five, Walt Fry at four, Marc Bergschneider at three. Craig Taylor and Tom O'Brien will complete the boat at two and bow respectively.

Holding a 34-4 mark, Parker opens his tenth season with the Crimson. He will be using his five lettermen--Bill Mahoney, John Baker, Gene LaBarre, Dave Mitchell, and captain Dave Sawyer--in his varsity eight along with senior Pete Sutton, who last year suffered a back injury and did not row.

Sophomores Steve Carr and Dave Fellows and coxswain Dave Weinberg have also earned a berth in the first shell.
