The Directors of the Harvard Cooperative Society announced yesterday that beginning this year elections for new members of the Board of Directors will be held in April. Elections were previously held in October.
William D. Andrews, chairman of the election procedures committee and professor of Law, said that the present election schedule "prevents the Coop from having a settled membership on the Board of Directors until November or December."
"The current procedure prevents any effective organization of committees, or other activities, particularly by the student directors until the school year is well underway," Andrews said. "Indeed, by the time directors are elected, Christmas is almost upon us and then exams, and then the year is half over."
Andrews, who also serves as assistant general counsel to the Coop, admitted that shifting the elections to the spring will mean that first-year students will be excluded from the Board.
"But the drawback is outweighed by the advantages of the change since the interests of first-year students in the Coop are not significantly different from those of upperclassmen," he said.
The directors of the Coop include 11 officer-alumni and 11 students from Harvard and MIT. Of the 11 students, there are three undergraduates and three graduates from Harvard, while MIT has four representatives and Radcliffe had one.
Students interested in serving on the Board for the academic year 1972-73 are asked to submit their names for consideration to the general manager's office of the Harvard Square Store no later than March 13
