Harvard Food Services has tentatively decided to close down the Freshman Union for all weekends next year to combat rising costs.
"Freshmen will eat in upperclass Houses on a rotational basis." W.C. Burriss Young, assistant dean of freshmen and chairman of a Committee on Housing and Undergraduate Life (CHUL) subcommittee on food, said yesterday.
"This way, for example, not all of Holworthy will have to trudge down to South House day after day, while Wigglesworth crosses the street to Adams House." he said. "It's much fairer than eating by affiliated Houses."
C. Graham Hurlburt, director of Food Services, said yesterday that the subcommittee had asked his department for ideas on ways of cutting boarding costs for undergraduates. He said he hopes "between $100,000 and $200,000" will be saved by closing the Union, but added that the plan is not yet definite.
With the additional burden of freshmen, each House may serve each weekend meal to an average of 40 per cent more students.
