SDS, UAG Want Open CRR Trials

The University Action Group (UAG) and Harvard-Radcliffe SDS will hold a demonstration Friday to demand that the Committee on Rights and Responsibilities (CRR) hold open hearings in the cases of Bonnie E. Blustein '72 and Alan J. Garfinkel, a fourth-year graduate student in Philosophy.

Richard J. Herrnstein, professor of Psychology, and Dean Whitlock filed charges Thursday with the CRR charging that Blustein and Garfinkel interfered with Herrnstein's "academic freedom and freedom of movement" and engaged in "intense personal harassment."

Herrnstein is the author of a controversial article on intelligence and heredity which appeared in the September issue of Atlantic Monthly.

Charles W. Burnham, professor of Mineralogy and head of the CRR, said yesterday. "There will be no open hearings." CRR meetings in the past have always remained closed.

Both defendants said yesterday that they plan to attack the charges made by Herrnstein and Whitlock "on the basis of discrepancies of the factual evidence" and to question "the political nature of the hearings."

Garfinkel expressed apprehension at the "widening scope of the CRR," which he said had progressed from expulsion proceedings for breaking down the doors of University Hall and ejecting a dean in 1969 to hearings for those in "a disorganized group asking angry and impolite questions for 20 minutes."

Herrnstein said yesterday. "I would not want my hearing to be any different from those in the past." He added that he saw "no basis for change.
