Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
The Crimson squash machine, which has swept 51 of 54 individual matches en route to a 2-0 record this season, looks for another slaughter as it clashes with Williams at 3 p.m. today at Hemenway Gynmasium.
Coaches of both teams agree that Harvard's top nationally ranked squad will simply outclass the Ephmen. "Williams just does not have a strong team," Harvard coach Jack Barnaby said yesterday. "They shouldn't give us much of a challenge."
Williams coach Sean Sloan, whose squad is 0-2 after losses to Dartmouth and Navy, also picked his racquet-men to be a sacrificial lamb to the Crimson.
"I expect a 9-0 shutout -- Harvard has a dynasty and I don't see any end in sight. They've got the best coaching in the country, the best talent, and the best spirit anywhere," he said.
The Ephmen, who return just three lettermen from last year's team, is led by senior captain Bill Simon, followed by Charlie Keiler, Jim Harty, Peter Talbert, Dan Cooke, Bill Eyre, Bob Beck, Bob Hodas, and Stuart Brown.
William's strongest chances to win a match are in the fifthman division with sophomore Cooke, who beat his opponent, 3-1, yesterday in the Navy match. But a victory elsewhere is unlikely, Sloan said. "Cooke is a very strong player and he could win, but otherwise, it doesn't look too good."
The Crimson lineup will be the same, with southpaw intercollegiate champ Peter Briggs anchoring the top spot, and rounded out by Andy Wiegand, Glen Whitman, Neil Vosters, Rob Sedwick, Archie Gwathmy, Pete Blasier, Fred Fisher, Steve Mead, and Tim Morgan.
SOCCER
The National Soccer Coaches Association honored three Harvard booters on its All-New England Soccer squad last Friday.
Senior forward Chris Papaganis, who set an Ivy League scoring record with 21 points in the regular season, freshman forward Bent Hinze, and senior back Rick Scott were all named on the first team. No Harvard players were picked for the second team.
