Harvard's undefeated hockey sqiad will put its streak on the line tonight in providence against Brown, a team that is traditionally though on home ice, and one that would love to get its second win of the season by upsetting the Crimson.
The match up will be the second Ivy League contest for both teams. Harvard, now ranked second in the nation, having trounced Penn 9-1, on December 9, and Brown losing to Cornell 8-2, in Ithaca. The Bruins early season record now stands at 1-5-0.
Brown has run into some bad luck so far and their recorded in deceptive. "They're a good sound team", Crimson coach Bill Clearly said yesterday "They had B.U. Eastern but let that one slip away 5-4, and they loss to the Cornell because of penalties early in the game. Against Rensselact polytech they ran into some hot goaltending lost in overtime (3-2) even though they outshot RPI"
The Bruins other three games were losses to Saint Lawrence 8-4 and 6-3 and a big ever Boston college 9-4 Harvard just narrowly escaped the claws of the the claws of the Eagles last Wednesday to hang on for a 6-4 victory.
I'm looking for a helluva game Bruin mentor A1 Soares said yesterday. "We're not going to Concede a damn thing indeed this will be a highly emotional game for the bruising Bruins one they would very much like to win "Our boys certainly aren't going to lie down and roll over," he said.
Soaters will throw three fairly equal lines at the crimson. "We don't have a Hynes McManama-Corkery line that's head and shoulders above the rest." He said, "so I don't know which line I'll start."
Brown captain Jack Merrill will center Mike Powers and Doug Smith on one Hoe; Brian Stephen, Dave Given and Diet Gamble make up another line, and Rich Heimach centers Dave Stevenson and Norm Howarth on a third line. Soares also lots Steve Shoe, "one of our better players," as a probability on of those three lines.
The Bruin defending pairings will be Keith Smith, the team's leading point getter with 3 goals and 9 assists, with Doug Allworth, and Gary Faryniuk with Peter Rotell. Either Jim Madich or Dave Sagaser will be in nets. "I haven't decided who will start, I'll look at both of them in practice and see who's the sharpest." Soares said.
Clearly will go with the same line-up that has been so successful in the first four games, with the possible exception of Harry Reynolds, who was injured in the B.C. game. Harry took a stick in the face, and was hurt pretty badly, forcing him to sit out the real of the game.
"He's tough," Clearly said, "and I know he really wants to play," "But I'm concerned about the rest of the season, I don't want to lose him. We still have some twenty games to go." If Reynolds doesn't play tonight. Clearly will dress Jay Riley and put David Gather, who skated in Reynold's place against B.C. on the line with Larry Desmond and Ted Thorndike. "It's too bad Harry as hurt" clearly said, "Brown is a physical club and we could really use him."
