Harvard Coaches Pilot Efforts Of Radcliffe's Varsity Athletes

Members of the Harvard coaching staff have been teaching Radcliffe tennis players the finer moves of the sport, the Radcliffe Department of Sports, Dance, and Recreation announced yesterday.

The assignment of Harvard coaches to Radcliffe varsity teams was initiated this fall as part of the five-year merger plan for Radcliffe and Harvard.

Head tennis coach Jack Barnaby and assistant coach Corey Wynn have been leading Radcliffe varsity tennis practices four days a week for an hour each day in preparation for this weekend's collegiate tournament at Yale. The two will coach the team twice a week for the rest of the fall and continue in the spring.

Barnaby and Wynn will also coach the Radcliffe varsity squash team during the winter.

"It's the best thing that ever happened to girls' tennis. It's really what we need," number two singles player Marcy Richmond said. Coaches Barnaby and Wynn "really know what they're talking about," she added.

Men Needed

Mary G. Paget, coordinator of the Radcliffe sports program and assistant to the director of Harvard athletics, explained that the Radcliffe program has "begun to have systems that bear resemblance to Harvard's systems." "We're wise enough to realize we need men to help us," she said.

Paget is aiming towards a set-up in which the varsity Radcliffe racquet teams are taught by Harvard coaches, while the junior varsity and athletic classes are directed by Radcliffe coaches.

The merger of the two athletic programs will eventually be extended to all sports, Paget said. The basketball team will also get a Harvard coach this winter she added.
