JV Booters Shut Out by Brown, 4-0

Brown's junior varsity soccer squad, padded with some of the varsity regulars, downed the Harvard JV's yesterday by a score of 4-0. This brings the JV's record to 1-2-1.

Crimson goalie, Peter Zurkow, was scored upon early in the game by the Brown offense. Play remained fairly even throughout the rest of the half, but a penalty in the last 20 seconds gave Brown a direct kick and a 2-0 halftime lead.

Seamus Malin, assistant Varsity Soccer Coach, switched goaltenders for the second half, replacing Zurkow with Bill Bryan. "(Zurkow) played a good game, but I wanted to give Bryan some playing time," Malin said. "It was a real baptism of fire for him."

The Bruins scored two goals at the start of the second half, and the Crimson was on the defensive for the rest of the game. There were a few Crimson offensive threats but the Brown goalie went unchallenged for most of the second half.

Lack of depth was a major factor in the defeat. The Crimson travelling squad consisted of only three or four substitutes in addition to the starters. "We usually beat them when we have more depth," Malin said. He added that the JV booters have had a very successful record against Brown with the exception of last year's loss and yesterday's defeat.

Malin said that the Bruins' depth was their strong point. With the addition of varsity first-stringers. Brown had more experience and more talent, he said. "They had some outstanding talent, some of whom I've seen on the Varsity. They had a better team and simply outplayed us," Malin said.

Malin said that he was not totally displeased with the team's effort because the competition was "unusually tough." The only real standout for the Crimson was fullback Steve Mead. He played a gallant game on defense, unfortunately on the losing side.

Malin praised the Brown team highly. "They were outstanding in the air. I think if you threw a cannonball at those guys, they'd probably jump up and head it."

The JV's defeated Babson, 3-2, in the season opener, lost to the University of Connecticut by the same score and tied Tufts, 1-1. Next week they face Boston University in a chance to even their record.
