Reports in yesterday's Boston Evening Globe of a 35 per cent increase in Cambridge rent rates were refuted last night by Alan Lefkowitz, chairman of the Cambridge Rent Board.
Contrary to the Globe's report, no decision was made about any increase over 1967 rates at yesterday's meeting of the Rent Board. The Board will meet again this Wednesday to establish a specific across-the-board rent hike, the subject of recent controversy between Cambridge landlords and tenants.
The increase figure will probably be between 30-35 percent. Lefkowitz told The Crimson yesterday.
A spokesman for the Cambridge Tenants' Organizing Committee pointed out that "for all practical purposes, since few Cambridge tenants can prove with documentary evidence what their 1967 rent was, landlords have a free reign in falsely inflating the 1967 rents, thus wiping out any theoretical decreases that the board claims will occur."
