Reds Net Pennant; Tigers Tie Series

A ninth inning leadoff home run by Johnny Beach and a two-out run scoring wild pitch by Pirate pitcher Bob Moose gave the Cincinnati Red a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday and with it the National League Pennant.

In the American League, a determined Detroit Tiger team kept its pennant hopes alive by making a three-run comeback in the tenth inning, topping the Oakland A's by an identical 4-3 score. The series will be decided tomorrow afternoon in Detroit.

The Tigers led off the bottom of the tenth inning with two consecutive hits by Dick McAuliffe and Alkaline. Bill Freehan singled off Joe Horien to send McAuliffe home, while Kaline later scored when Oakland reliever Dave Hamilton walked Norm Cash with the bases loaded.

Jim Northrup capped the dramatic rally by driving in the winning run with a solid drive over the head of rightfielder Matty Alou. The Winning pitcher was John Hiller in relief of Mickey Lolich, Horlen took the loss.

Johnny Bench, the National League home run champion, drilled the second pitch by Dave Giusti into the rightfield seats to tie the Pirates 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

Tony Perez and Denis Menke followed with base hits and Giusti was pulled from the game.

Cesar, Geronimo hit a Sacrifice fly off reliever Moose sending pinch runner George Foster to third. The count on Hal McRae, pinch hitting for Clay Carroll, went to one and one when Moose fired a wild pitch allowing Foster to race home.

Red pitcher Clay Carroll was credited with the win and Giusti took the loss.
