Booters to Battle Engineers Today

Hoping to defend its Ivy League championship and improve on last year's NCAA finish, Harvard's varsity soccer team opens its season tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. on the Business School Field against M.I.T.

"Our main objective is to work on our new 4-4-2 offensive system in a game situation and develop greater depth," said coach Bruce Munro. "That may sound like we're pretty confident but we really should beat M.I.T."

In an exhibition game last Saturday against B.U., it took about ten minutes for the players to get warmed up and make the system work, but when it did the goals just floated in. When the first team retired at the half they held a 5-0 lead.

Sophomore Felix Adedeji and senior Phil Kydes scored two goals each and captain Charlie Thomas chipped in one. With the reserves battling B.U.'s varsity in the second half, the final score was narrowed to 5-3.

"Last week we lost to Holy Cross in overtime, 4-3," said M.I.T. coach Bill Morrison. "We realize who we're playing. I won't say we're gonna knock the shit out of 'em, cause we're not. I guess you could say that we are ready," chuckled Morrison.

This fall, defending its Ivy league title will be more difficult for Harvard than it was last year. Both Penn and Brown are loaded with lettermen and are expected to battle Harvard for the crown.

Last week the Quakers were very impressive in a 5-0 victory over a strong Temple squad. In a typical rough game at Brown, the Bruins beat the University of Rhode Island, 5-3. Twenty-six fouls were called and two U.R.I. players were thrown out of the game in the course of two fights. In other Ivy action. Yale lost to a veteran Wesleyan team, 2-0.
