Sailors Earn Berth in Nationals

After two years of frustration, the seniors on Harvard's sailing team took second in the New England Dinghy Championships last weekend at Yale to become one of the two New England teams in next month's Nationals.

The Crimson has not qualified for the Nationals since 1964. The past two years. Harvard, bolstered by a strong Class of 1971, dominated New England competition, only to fall apart in the final qualifying regatta.

The University of Rhode Island won the New Englands with 43 points, as its skippers won the two divisions. Harvard's skippers were second in each division to give them second overall with 64 points. Yale and B. U. finished next, while M. I. T., considered a contender, was only seventh in the ten-team field.

Robbie Doyle, sailing in Division "A" for the Crimson, with Phil DeNormandie and Charlie Koch sharing the crew duties, took three firsts and two seconds in the ten races. He finished with a 32-point total behind U. R. I.'s Skip White with 28 points.

In Division "B", Abbott Reeve, with first DeNormandie and then George Putnam as crew, took two firsts and three seconds for 32 points, but U. R. I.'s Henry Bossett could do nothing wrong the whole weekend and coasted into first place with a mere 15 points.

Flukiness

The regatta was sailed in Yale's 420 sloops on Long Island Sound off Branford. Conn. "There was a steady wind most of the time; not like those damn rivers and lakes," Reeve said. The Charles River and Tufts' lake, where the Crimson lost last weekend, are noted for their flukey conditions.

The Nationals will be held June 16-18 at the Naval Academy, in Annapolis. The Crimson qualified for the event for four straight years in 1961 to 1964. ending up third, second, second and fifth respectively in the nation.

In a dinghy regatta hosted by Emerson College on the Charles last Saturday, the Crimson finished second. Steve Glovinsky and Dave Brownlee co-skippered in Division "A" and Rud Istvan and Doug Libby co-skippered in Division "B".

Next week seven Harvard sailors will compete in the New England Single-Handed Sailing Championships, at M. A. T. The Crimson has more qualifiers than any other school. U. R. I. and M. A. T. each had four sailors survive the qualifications, which were held Sunday, April 25 in eight heats scattered throughout New England.

DeNormandie, Doyle, Glovinsky, Istvan, Koch, Dave Little and Reeve will said for the Crimson, Doyle and Koch each won their qualifying heats, while DeNormandie, Glovinsky and Reeve took seconds.

'Cliffe Sailors Win

Radcliffe's sailing team won the Sloop Shrew Trophy over the weekend on the Charles and demolished the three teams that finished ahead of it last weekend in the New England championships, when the Crimson failed to qualify for the Nationals.

Barbic Grant and Julie Bradley in Division "A" took two firsts in the six races for 18 points and second in the division, while Janice Stroud, skippering for the first time this year, rook low-point skipper honors in Division "B" with a mere 13 points. Kathy Angell crewed for Stroud.

Radcliffe won the regatta with 31 points to 36 for M. I. T. and 54 for Newton College.
