Penn State and Yale tied for first in the rain-abbreviated Eastern golf tournament held in New Haven over the weekend, as the Crimson golfers wound up eighth with an unimpressive 404 total. Penn State and Yale finished with five-man totals of 391.
Penn State and Penn, which finished third at 396, will represent the East in the NCAA tourney at Tueson, Arizona next month.
Normally the EIGA sends its top two squads to the nationals, but Yale is not eligible this season because the Bulldoes have been placed on NCAA probation over the Jack Langer affair.
The Ivy League title was decided this year by the team standings in the Eastern tourney. Among the Ivies, the Crimson finished fifth behind Yale, Penn, Brown and Princeton.
Rains Came
A downpour on Saturday caused a cancellation of the first 18 holes of the scheduled 36-hole event. Sunday's 18 holes-played in a cold drizzle-decided the championship.
Yale's Chase Sanderson, playing on his home course, shot a 74 to grab medallist honors. Skip Barry was able to muster only a 78 for the Crimson's top individual score.
Other Harvard scores included Skip Kistner, 79; Andy Marks, 81; Cooch Owen, 81; and Fred Sherman, 84.
