CRR Notifies 24 Students Charged With Disruption

At least 14 students received letters yesterday from the Committee on Rights and Responsibilities (CRR) informing them that the Harvard Administration. Students for a Just Peace (SJP), or both, are charging them with disrupting the SJP's Counter Teach-In in Sanders Theatre on March 26.

The CRR mailed letters on Tuesday to 24 students altogether in connection with the disruption, according to Donald G. M. Anderson, McKay Professor of Applied Mathematics and chairman of the CRR.

Cambridge police arrested John Pennington '67-4 yesterday on charges of disturbing a public assembly in connection with the Counter, Teach-In incident. Pennington will stand trial on May 14 in East Cambridge District Courthouse, on charges along with John T. Berlow '71 and James T. Kilbreth '69, charged with criminal trespass and disturbing a public assembly in connection with the incident.

The Administration filed complaints with the CRR against 13 students, charging them with participation in the "disruption of a public hearing sponsored by members of the Harvard community, thus denying the speakers freedom of expression and the audience freedom to hear." Sargent Kennedy '28, Secretary to the Corporation, signed the complaints.

SJP members filed complaints against 15 students, four of whom also face Administration charges. Only Peter Levi '71 and Joe Rothchild '74 are known to have received two complaints.

A majority of the SJP complaints said the defendants "shouted and chanted on Friday, 26 March 1971. with the intent and effect of silencing the speakers in Sanders Theatre during the sche-duled Teach-In... in violation of the Resolution of Rights and Responsibilities," Daniel Pipes '71, a member of SJP. said yesterday.

Pipes said that SJP planned to use both eyewitnesses and film clips to document its complaints.

Archibald Cox '34, University troubleshooter, refused to say what evidence the Administration would present.

The defendants contacted yesterday planned different actions at their hearings. Martin Goodman '71 said, "I kept my mouth shut all through that meeting and I'm going to find witnesses to prove it."

Ira Helfand '71, a member of SDS, said that he would conduct a "political" defense. "I intend to ask the Administration whether they are actually going to punish people for shouting down war criminals," he said.

The hearings will be held May 6-8 on the tenth floor of Holyoke Center. CRR Chairman Donald G. Anderson refused to disclose what security precautions he planned to take.
