Golfers Set for Toughest Match; Dartmouth, Holy Cross Are Foes

The Crimson golfers, fresh from routing a weak Greater Boston field, face their toughest competition to date in this afternoon's match against Holy Cross and Dartmouth at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Worcester.

Cooch Owen, back from an extended Florida vacation, will make his debut of the season in today's match.

Owen seemed more concerned yesterday with the cold, damp weather than with the two strong teams the Crimson will be facing. "Dartmouth will be pretty tough. But Holy Cross? Holy Cross doesn't have any athletes." Owen said.

Holy Cross may be more of a problem than Owen thinks. Crusader coach Gerry Anderson yesterday called this year's squad, 8-3 for the year, "the best we've had at Holy Cross in a long, long time."

"We've got a good. solid team, with seven low shooters. And the home course will be to our advantage in a close match. Honestly, I will be surprised if we don't beat Harvard," Anderson said.

Holy Cross is led by captain Bob Elliott, runner-up in last fall's ECAC golf tournament and 1969 New Hampshire state champion. Completing what Anderson refers to as his "big three" are Rick McDermott and Mike Cawley.

While Holy Cross is having their best season in quite a while, Dartmouth is one of those squads that is good year after year. And this season the Big Green has lost only one match-to St. Anselm's. That loss broke a three-year, 24-match winning streak for the Indians.

Although Dartmouth lost three seniors off last year's Eastern championship team, three seniors-captain Marsh Gavre, Dave Hill, and Jim Cox-once again make Dartmouth one of the top squads in the East.
