Linksmen Defeat Big Red Despite Mediocre Scores

Golf coach Cooney Weiland was pacing back and forth in front of the club-house before yesterday's Cornell match. "Its cold as hell," he grumbled. "We should have worn our hockey suits."

The brisk temperatures, along with high winds and a rugged Brookline Country Club, did drive the scores sky-high; but Weiland's linksmen were able to edge the Big Red, 408-414. to win their only home match of the season.

Harvard evened its record at 3-3 by winning the match, which saw only three men break 80.

The Crimson's Skip Kistner and Cornell's Craig Scott turned in fine rounds of 77-best of the day, Harvard's Andy Marks, not even on the team two weeks ago, finished with a 79.

"I was five over after the first seven holes." Kistner said. "At that point, I was telling myself that it was going to be another one of 'those days'. But all of a sudden, I started making pars."

Three Harvard golfers-Skip Barry, John Stoviak, and Terry Wynne-shot 84's to provide the Crimson with just enough stability to win the match. Although Cornell got an 81 from Steve Snyder and an 84 from Lew Stone, two 86's ended the Big Red's hopes of victory.

Sophomore Bill Salatich finished with an 85, which meant his score wasn't counted in the five-man total. But Salatich didn't seem in the least disappointed, commenting, "My short irons went to hell, but my driving's coming along, I'm ready to take off."

The captains of both teams had unusually bad days. Crimson captain Fred Sherman, low scorer in the Harvard linksmen's first three meets, shot an 86, while Cornell's Peter Burtch managed to do even worse, shooting an 89. "I'm just saving it for the Greater Bostons."' Sherman said after the match.
